The Impressive Way !

SmartSection, Cape Coral, Ubuntu and Alpha 2

The kids are not up yet and I am… So I took the opportunity to package SmartSection 2.14 Final as well as SmartObject 1.0.1 Final. I asked a few friends to install both to make sure everything is running smoothly. I am now waiting a little bit so they can get back to me and hopefully, we can release both modules ! So, while I’m waiting, I felt like blogging, so here I am…

The last 2 months were pretty busy for me! First, my family and I had the chance to spent the whole month of May in Cape Coral, Florida, in a very nice house by a canal. Can’t say I did not like working by the pool with a little Pina Colada… Even though these 4 weeks were not vacation for me and I had to work, my family was indeed in vacation and I did whatever I could to spent time with them. And a few pictures of that can be found on our personal web site.

Then, we got back home and things got back to the way they were. And it was probably too calm for me, so I took the opportunity to finally get rid of Microsoft and make the switch to Ubuntu. I wanted to do this for so long, but never actually had the courage to do so… It is so hard to leave shoes you are used to, even thought you know they have holes everywhere! Anyway, I did it ! And I am very proud of it!

I must thank Rodrigo for his help and the very cool tutorial he gave me: The Perfect Desktop - Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron).

At first, everything when smoothly. Install was flawless and I was even able to connect to my wireless network on the first try ! Then I started configuring it to set everything I need for my web development needs. XAMPP, EasyEcplise for PHP, Pidgin, Skype, KeePassX, FileZilla, etc…

I came across a few challenges when it came to videos display… After searching a bit, I found this and it helped much: Comprehensive Multimedia & Video How-to.

The other challenge I had was to find a replacement for the very efficient combination of WinSCP, Pageant and Putty. After a little struggling, I finally found it! Applications > Accessories > Passwords and Encryption Keys, OpenSSH and SSH Agent do everything I need! And I’m using Nautilus, the default file manager of Ubuntu instead of WinSCSP. The bookmarks management are a little limitative, but I’m confident someone will improve it sooner or later…

All along my migration to Ubuntu, I have bookmarked all useful links on my Delicious account, for my future needs, but if it can help someone else !

Finally, when I was back up to speed on my new Ubuntu environment, I was then able to jump back more actively in the community I love and help getting ImpressCMS 1.1 Alpha 2 out! While many bugs of Alpha 1 were fixed by our awesome community, the OpenID branch still needed to be merged in the 1.1 branch. This was the first thing I did when I got back! And then we started the preparation of 1.1 Alpha 2, which was released on my birthday!
